Herbs offer a powerful way to heal after birth, assisting new mothers through their first 42 days with gentle support, directly from mother earth. As the body and mind navigate the profound changes of early motherhood, these time-honored herbs can provide essential nourishment and comfort. As a postpartum doula I used herbs in sitz baths, teas, tinctures and more. The following herbs are thought to help balance hormones, ease physical discomfort, and support emotional well-being. Whether you're a first-time mama or adding to your growing family, these 5 herbal allies might just be the soothing companions you need on your path to recovery.
1. Plantain leaf
With anti-inflammatory, bleeding reducing, and wound healing properties plantain leaf is the perfect addition to a postpartum sitz bath. And, if you’re local to Santa Cruz, this herbal ally is one that you can harvest yourself. Remember to only take what you need, treat the plants and land with respect, and ask permission before harvesting.

2. Nettle
Another plant that can be wild crafted here in Santa Cruz (but be sure to research how to do so safely!) stinging nettle is filled with nutrients and minerals that help replenish the new mother when sipped as a tea. Don’t worry, once it’s dried or combined with hot water, all stinging is neutralized.

3. Shatavari
A staple in Ayurvedic herbology, shatavari is an incredible women’s ally. This root may help balance hormones postpartum and increase prolactin levels (which can boost milk production). As an adaptogen it may help regulate the nervous system and improve mood. Note that Shatavari is a phytoestrogen and should be used under the care of an Ayurvedic practitioner or medical professional.

4. Mugwort
In traditional Chinese Medicine moxibustion, a type of heat based therapy, relies on burning sticks of compressed mugwort and is often used as part of traditional postpartum 'mother-roasting' treatments. Used around the womb space, Moxa may boost circulation, tonify the uterus, build blood, and promote emotional well-being.

5. Rose
Rose petals are one of my favorite additions to postpartum foot baths. Not only does rose have naturally anti-inflammatory properties, its color and smell bring an element of luxury and make new mamas feel extra loved and extra special (as they are!).

Remember, be sure to always check with a medical provider before using any herbal allies. The above should be used as education only, not as a recommendation of care.
